Be on the lookout

Starting April 5 you need to be on the lookout for our new advertising campaign

Rubber Ducky Resort Scrapyard Paintball

If you see this sign you could win a 2for1 camping coupon from Rubber Ducky Resort and also a 2for1 Paintball coupon from Scrapyard Paintball. Go to the fan page of either business and post the location that you saw the sign. There will be two winners – one from Scrapyard and one from RDR. But, the second person has to post a different location so there is nooo copying.

Even if you don’t participate in the contest let me know where you saw the sign either by email or post a comment on here. Whenever we start a different advertising campaign it is helpful for me to get some feedback to see how it is working. This is why I am being somewhat secretive about exactly where the signs are so that I can get a true idea of if people saw it. For example last year we rented one of the advertising signs along route 90 and not person mentioned it. I even quizzed people that travel the road everyday and they didn’t even know the sign was there and it had already been up for almost two weeks. We won’t be doing that again. I have high hopes for this campaign starting tomorrowish, I think we should get some good feedback but I will keep you posted and in a little while I will start releasing more details about where the signs are too.

The die hards

Yes, believe it or not I have campers staying here today. Some of our seasonals had made plans when the forecast was much better and still decided to come out anyway.  Really it is not much different than Thanksgiving weekend was last fall and I don’t think last May long was much better on the Friday evening. They won’t be having any bonfires but they said it is still nice to get out of  the city and relax with friends. I just hope that we don’t wake up to snow on the ground in the morning.

April Fools Anyone?

Was anyone made the fool this morning? I was watching Breakfast TV this morning and their fool was a story about a seeing eye cat, also heard of someone doing the traditional turn all the clocks ahead and make someone think they are late. Me, I got no fools this year. Last year I think my joke was that the campground was open and the pool ready for swimming. Of course there was still a foot of snow on the ground so that actually somewhat worked. This year, not so much.

I made an executive decision the other day to ‘officially’ open the campground today. Really all that was involved was posting on our website that we have some sites open. We are having a much busier spring break than in past years. I am going to give a lot of credit to the weather as it has put people in a much better mood than if there was still that foot of snow. We have had a couple staying in on of our rooms all month, but they are ready to head out today. They have purchased a fifth wheel and it sounds like they will mostly be going wherever the wind takes them. I had another family in a room for a couple nights earlier this week.Yesterday,  I got a last minute booking for a room tonight, and I already had a booking for two rooms for Friday and Saturday night. Wow.  Hopefully this is a sign of the season to come and not an April Fool’s Joke.

I had some seasonals asking about getting early power so that they could stay out this weekend, but now with the forecast change I am not sure if they will venture out. Unfortunately Friday sounds like a write off with lots of rain on the way. Hopefully they are wrong yet again.

I have been finalizing the advertising for our 2010 campground map. We picked up a couple new advertisers this year – the West Interlake Trading Company ( http://www.westinterlaketradingcompany.com) will have an ad. Another new advertiser is The Creative Cake. Crissy is will custom make a cake to whatever you want. You can see pictures on her facebook group http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/group.php?gid=121230273882 or for nonfacebookers I have posted a few of the pictures here. Last year there were quite a few camping birthday parties held here so I am thinking that once the word gets out she might get a few orders from here. She is based right out of Warren, so would be handy to go and pick the cake up and not have to worry about storing a big cake while camping.

It is amazing to see what she can create.

Unofficially open

I never thought that I would hear myself saying this in March, but if someone drove in the campground today towing a camper I wouldn’t hesitate to say sure I have a campsite for you.  Of course that is not likely to happen but if things keep up like this we will be ‘officially’ open quite early this year. I actually had some seasonals inquire about staying overnight next weekend. Normally the power to the sites is not turned on until April 15, but it looks like we will be making special arrangements for this unusual year.

As of right now the weather network is saying we will see a high of 18c tomorrow. I really, really hope so, but like everyone else is thinking we will believe it when we see it.  Sounds like perfect spring break weather to me.

I am just planning out my advertising for this season with part 1 beginning next week. This is a joint effort with us and Scrapyard Paintball. I can’t give away too much information because we are planning to do a contest in conjunction with the advertising. Let’s just say it will involve 2 people winning free camping and free paintballing. I am going to try running the contest through our facebook pages, so if you are not already a fan you may want to become one this week. The details will be announced on April 5 and then all you have to do is keep your eyes out for our ad.

I must admit to just having one of those well blonde moments (my apologies to any blondes that are offended). At this time of year it is quite common to have people come out just to drive around and have a look. So I am in my kitchen and am watching this van drive around and making sure this is what they are doing and all is well. Then I see it stop in a strange place near the back of the campground and sit there for quite a while. Not really somewhere that you would be looking around at anything so I’m trying to figure out what they might be doing and then they drive out again. So I’m thinking that is a little weird but oh well. About half an hour later I get email from geocaching.com that someone has posted a log entry on my geocache and ‘click’ on went the lightbulb.  I put the cache right close to where they were parked and really should have figured out what they were doing but nope nada did not clue in.lol

Not a funny joke

I don’t know about everyone else but when I looked out the window this morning I had to do a double take. It wasn’t quite light out  and my eyes maybe weren’t quite focussing yet, but I literally had to look twice to process the white ground. I don’t remember seeing anything in the weather forecast about an Alberta Clipper and over an inch of snow on the way. Hopefully once we get past the next couple days we will be back in the clear and on our way to summer.

At least we were able to get a head start on spring in the few nice days that we did have last week. We now have a nice fresh layer of crushed rock covering the roadways and the grader is  sitting in the snow waiting to be put to work. I have started to restock our store shelves and our spring shipment of RV supplies arrived on Monday afternoon. Our new rental hot tubs have been unloaded and are ready to be taken for a test drive. Once Mother Nature is done with her games we will be well on our way to being ready for spring and summer camping season. We spent today checking out some new products for our store and also for the RDR Grill. We found some interesting and unique products; oh ya and had lots of yummy samples.

I finally had to stop procrastinating and get my last painting project for the off season finished. If you have been following my blog you will remember that I painted the rec building in early winter but still on my todo list at the time was the main campground washrooms. The thought of painting around 8 toilets and plumbing under 10 sinks just was not very appealing. I don’t really like painting at the best of times and all these nooks and crannies just made it worse. But it was time to suck it up, call in some reinforcements and get it done. The boys bathroom is now blue and the girls bathroom is now pinkish. I don’t know what color to call it since we just took two part pails of leftover paint, mixed them together and ended up with a color in the pinky red tone. Dont’ tell anyone but I will let you in on a secret:I was a little worried about what color I was creating as the first color started looking more hot pink than I had first thought. Luckily the second color toned things down and if anyone asks I had it planned that way all along. (That’s my story and I am sticking to it).

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

RV show 2010

As I mentioned in the previous post we spent Thursday evening voluntering at the RV show for Manitoba Association of Campground and Interlake Tourism Association. Of course I took my camera with me so I could share some pics with you. Unfortunately we did not have as many people pass through the MACAP area as we maybe could have. There was some changes made during set up on Wednesday and we ended up on the main floor just inside the entrance. This did not turn out to be the best area since most people would just beeline up the escalator to get to the other floors. GNR brought a tent trailer to put in our area and Krevco brought a hot tub and some outdoor furniture. This was a help as it did draw some people into our area. We did manage to give out a few campground guides that evening and hopefully a lot more went out throughout the weekend. I heard a report that some of the dealers felt that this was the busiest Thursday they had seen in a while. I am quite sure that the weather was a big reason for that. I can tell that everyone is getting itchy to start camping.

More of the Manitoba Campground Association booth

Next we go to the Parks and Beaches area of the Manitoba Adventures display. We were volunteering for the Interlake Tourism Association and they had a big part  of setting up this area. This was a busy section of the show as you can tell there was lots of stuff to look at and they had some highland dancers stop by and put on a show while we were there. I heard a rumour that the Eriksdale Creamery Museum was going to be there churning some butter on Saturday. A big Kudos to Gail From ITA, Jacques from Oak Hammock and everyone else that helped to set things up because it was a great display.

This guy was just hanging out

Jacques from Oak Hammock Marsh was measuring people to let them know which birds had the same wingspan as they did.

The show wasn’t just all fun and games. We did some work too. After much examination of the hot tub that Krevco donated to the MACAP site we decided it was time to upgrade our rental hot tubs.

Spring is springing

I think this weekend is the unofficial start to summer dreaming in Manitoba. It is the RV show at the convention centre. We will be there tonight so if you are coming down stop in and say hi. We will be starting the evening on the main floor in the Manintoba Campground Association booth. We are at the bottom of the escalators as soon as you walk in the main entrance. Also on the main floor is a whole bunch of tent trailers. I am not sure what all is on the second floor since many exhibitors hadn’t set up yet. There are usually displays from Krevco, Happy Camper, and a bunch of other camping related retailers. The third floor is where everyone always goes Wow. This is full and I mean full of all sorts of RVS. Everything from normal size family trailers up to the big diesel pushers. It is interesting to just walk through and see what kind of new toys are available. Right in the middle of the third floor is a display that represents the 5 tourism regions of Manitoba. One of which is Interlake Tourism Association and this is where we will be finishing off the evening. They spent many hours working on the display and they have even set up a whole mini marsh area complete with boardwalk.

I am sure we have all been watching the snow disappearing over the last few days and hoping. I am trying to remain positive and think that spring is really here. But, a little piece of me seems to remember that last year went much the same as this and then wham, we got hit with another storm. If we dare listen to the weather forecast that won’t happen this year. In fact according theweathernetwork.com it is going to stay about freezing for the next 2 weeks. One can only hope. We deserve an early spring and a hot summer.

A plea for help

This post came my way via facebook and I thought I would share in case anyone out there can help Gail and our community out.

From Gail Spencer Lamm I have been asked by my employer, the West Interlake Trading Company, to organize a “Turkey Shoot Fundriaser” in the RM of Woodlands area – seriously I don’t even own a gun. Somebody out there is going to help me with this, somebody who knows all about it. Are you that person? If so please contact me right away because… right now I’m crapping my pants a little. Thanks!

If you are that person or know of that person you can contact Gail directly through http://www.westinterlaketradingcompany.com/ or I can also put you in touch.

There has to be someone out there who knows something about this and hopefully she can find them.

Lions and Lambs

I just found out how to link my blog to my facebook profile so welcome to any new readers that may have come my way from fb. Feel free to check through the archives and catch up on what you have missed. I realize that I am not going to win a Pullitzer prize any time soon, but hopefully I can keep you interested for a minute or two.

We have all heard the saying in like a lion out like a lamb. Around here it definately has been like a lamb and we are enjoying every minute of it. Does this mean we can expect March to go out like a lion? I for one am hoping not. I checked out the 14 day trend and if they know what they are talking about we are in for a very nice start to March with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures.

I know the snowmobilers are not happy to hear the forecast. It has been a horrible winter as far as they are concerned. From what I hear the turnouts for the local Poker Derbies have not been good. There certainly hasn’t been much snowmobiler traffic coming into the warmup. This weekend is the rescheduled Northern Lites Derby and although I wish them luck this melting snow is not going to do much for their turnout unfortunately. But, if anyone wants breakfast we will be serving up some pancakes, eggs, sausages and bacon.

Saturday is also a fundraising social for the South Interlake ATV Club in Argyle. Local band Past the Perimeter will be playing. If anyone wants tickets they can stop by here or just give me a call and we will put some aside.

There are actually quite a few different things coming up if you are looking for something to do. This weekend is also the Mid Canada Boat Show (http://midcanadaboatshow.com/). Next weekend is the RV Show (http://manitobarvshow.ca/). These are great shows to start the summer dreaming. Our local tourism area is going to be at both shows so be sure to stop by the Interlake Tourism (www.interlaketourism.com) booth and say hi, check out what we have to offer around here. March 13 will be Poker Night at the Duck then on March 20 the West Interlake Trading Company is holding a Time, Talent and Treasure auction in the Warren Hall. Details are here http://www.westinterlaketradingcompany.com/?page_id=499. They are raising funds to put a new roof on the elevator in Warren. In case you didn’t know this group “The West Interlake Trading Company is responsible for a local heritage site called the ”Warren Grain Elevator.” It conducts tours of the Grain Elevator as well as caring for the maintenance, upkeep and development of the site” I figured I should just quote the WITC site since they can say it better than I can.

I don’t know that it is terribly funny but it is not very often that you come across a cartoon that mentions Manitoba so I thought I would share:

The green green grass

It seems like every year there is a certain week where all of a sudden the campground reservations for next summer take a big jump. Well this was that week. In a period of 3 days I think I processed close to 12 bookings for summer 2010. Normally we get only a couple a month at the beginning of winter and then February seems to be the start of vacation planning in Manitoba. Although this is technically the shortest month somehow it really seems to drag on. However, to me it is the turning point in a long cold winter. Once February is done and the calendar turns to March it is full swing planning for the upcoming summer. I really don’t care if there is still a foot of snow on the ground or like last year and we get a big storm. It is time to look for the green grass on the other side of the snow bank. It may take a shovel to find it, but I am sure it is still there somewhere.

With the coming of March also comes the start of my full swing search for employees. So time to spread the word if you know anyone looking for a summer job they can go to our website and fill out an application http://www.rubberduckyresort.com/Classifieds-Employment.page or just email me a resume. One step better is to drop it off in person since that way I can put a face to a name when making my hiring decision.
