Fast forward to almost done

I skipped a few days of updates on the renos and we are actually still one step farther than I have pictures ready to post. By tomorrow I should be ready to unveil the final outcome. There is really nothing interesting about drywalling and cleaning and drywalling and cleaning. You get the picture. In addition to trying to do the reno we also had an ATV club meeting on Tuesday, a rental for a shower on Thursday and our girls birthday party this afternoon (Sat). Friday morning was the last sanding on the drywall and then we started painting. My goal was to get the primer and one coat of paint done but we kept moving and Nicole and I were able to get the walls, a display case and 2 other cabinets all painted. I just have a few touchups to do, but otherwise we are done and the baseboards were on by 9:00 pm on Friday. Whew nice to be done – almost.

This is wall paint done, tables in place but before floor paint.

This is wall paint done, tables in place but before floor paint.

We had to clean up dust once again for the party today and Dennis is now painting the floor as I speak (Sat evening).

Floor painting is done

He actually had quite a bit more paint leftover than he expected so he just kept painting. The paint that we have to use on the floor is a two part epoxy, so once you mix it up you either paint or it turns into one big hard glob and is garbage. Because we hadn’t planned originally to do the rest of the floor we had none of the other furniture stuff moved out of the way, so he had to paint around everything. It looks a little odd right now until we get some more paint to finish the entire floor in the rec building.
rec-renos-3 Just a couple counter areas to add in and we can start getting organized again. We are not sure exactly how long the floor will take to dry completely, but by Monday at the latest we will be able to move stuff back into the concession area again.
Then onto the next project – operation pool start up. The icebergs are almost melted this morning.

Today has been drywall mudding day. I think there are only a couple finishing touches then that will be all done. Things are really starting to come together.

Hmm what’s going on?

It has been a busy couple days around here and there has been a big change in the rec building. This is how it looked Sunday morning.

This was sometime mid morning on Monday.

And this is at the end of the work day on Monday.

I uploaded this picture onto my computer this morning and had to laugh about the case of Busch and some empties right in the middle of the picture. I thought about editting them out somehow but then noone would believe the picture was taken here. lol. At least they only had half a dozen beer during the ‘after walls going up’ celebration. The guys are hard at it again today and I will have some more pictures later. You will have to stay tuned to see what the final renovations are.
Things are busy on the other side of the yard too. We have approximately 2000 trees being planted this spring. Our tree planter probably doesn’t like the muddy field conditions, but the trees certainly will. (I know that’s small consolation) In the yard itself things have dried up quite nicely. We just have our normal wet spots left of course, but everything else is basically dry. Lake Boobieslappen is quite full and still has a fairly significant snow bank in the middle. If the weather keeps up like it has been that should be melted by July. lol.

Sleepy Snakes

Apparently the garter snakes at Narcisse Snake Dens are having an extra long nap this year. They are normally starting to move around by the 4th weekend in April, but this year aren’t expected to be moving until the beginning of May. From what I hear it is an amazing spectacle to see the slithering snakes during this mating season. It is estimated close to 70,000 red sided garter snakes come to Narcisse every spring. I say ‘from what I hear’ because that is as close as I personally plan to get to the snake dens. A very, very small piece of me would like to go up and see them, but a very, very huge piece of me wants absolutely no part of it. But I know there a lot of people that just don’t agree with me because Narcisse is a very popular tourist attraction at this time of year. There is a lot of information at this website http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/wildlife/managing/snakes_status.html. It even says the interpretive staff will show you the proper way to handle a snake and let you pick one up. If you have ever wondered how to tell the sex of a snake that website is the place to go and did you know that a snake could have up to 40 babies? Wow, no wonder there are so many snakes around.

Good news for anyone that was worried. The slushees and iced cappuccinos passed our rigorous testing procedure this weekend.

Good riddance snow!!

Those warm temperatures in the last few days have certainly gotten rid of the snow quickly, but now we see all the icky stuff that has been hiding under the snow for 6 months. Time to start cleanup I guess.
We do have some snowbanks still hanging around and of course some water, but overall things are looking pretty good. If someone showed up today looking for a campsite I could find a couple to choose from.
We have had some people out and about to look around already this year and if we get a nice weekend or two I would expect a few more. Friday is the test drive day for the slushees and ice caps. Hmmmm Yummy. I know one owner, two assistant managers and one employee who will be impatiently waiting for them to freeze. Anyone else who is in the mood for a cool, creamy iced cap feel free to stop by.
I am just finalizing my updated menu for the RDR Grill. Everything is basically the same as last year just tweaked and kicked up a little- and we now have an official name. We added a new flavour of chicken wings, a couple new burgers and I just may throw in some special desserts here and there – homemade of course.
Many of you may have gotten my “What’s new and what’s happening” newsletter the other day. If not you can view it on our website. As the name implies it lists most of what will be new this year, with a few things that may be added as they happen. I also included a brief listing of some of the events going on this year as well. I expect to add a few more things in here and there as well.

Hey wasn’t that…

Yes it was. If you have your radio tuned to QX 104fm this week you probably just heard our ad. We decided to do some radio advertising as part of our marketing kick off this spring. The ads are only 10 seconds long but this is where the crazy, easy to remember name really works for us. People tend to remember our name even after only 10 seconds. Don’t have a radio? Just go to their website

We are slowing gathering all the things that we need to do an expansion on the concession area in the rec building. Our main goal is to create a larger area to display our store items like the groceries, candies, camping supplies etc. We will also be carrying a selection of rv supplies this summer. We will have the common items in stock and you can also order in the larger items like awnings or items that are specific to your camper. We will likely be starting work next week and of course I will post updates and pictures on here.
Yesterday was the first day to make reservations on the Manitoba Parks website and as always we saw a jump in our number of reservations yesterday. It is still hard to believe when you look outside that we are down to 24 more days until we open. By the sounds of the forecast the snow should disappear fast towards the end of this week. Ok I guess I should know better and recheck the forecast before I quote it because now we are dropping degrees in our highs. We are still getting the double digit lows, but where did the double digit highs go???? Have you noticed how late the sunsets are now – 8:15pm? We may not have the warm spring weather but at least we are past the dark, gloomy days of winter.

Getting the RV ready for summer camping

According to my ticker it is only one month until camping. I know what you are thinking because I can see out my window too. Someday we will hit the double digit highs and someday we will have no snow. This time of year I think we all quickly forget how fast the snow will disappear. At least that is what I am trying to tell myself.

I came across this article on dewinterizing that I thought might be of interest to some of you. It may not be high on the priority list with a foot of snow on the ground, but someday soon we will be able to start thinking camping. If you would like to view the check list that she refers to in the article just copy and paste the link at the bottom and it will take you to the original article with the link.

  • **Dewinterizing your RV involves more than just the fresh water system. When you bring your rig out of hibernation is the best time to do some routine maintenance!

Following are some tips that will help get you started:

Climb onto the roof (carefully!) to inspect the seams, seals and vents for cracks, splits or other damages and to remove any debris. Replace anything that’s broken (i.e., vents)
You know you want to, so go ahead and give your rig a thorough wash (and wax if you’re so inclined). Be sure to wash the roof (be careful up there!) to help control those pesky black streaks and don’t forget to treat the tires.
Open windows and doors to get some fresh air inside and eliminate any stale, musty air and disperse any condensation. Leave the cabinets and closets open to let the fresh air get in there too. Inspect the ceiling for any leaks that may have occurred over the winter.
Inspect propane tanks for cracks and rust.
Check hoses and gaskets for cracks and leaks, especially for anything related to propane.
Refill the LP tanks, if necessary. Turn the LP on at the main valve and check for leaks with an approved liquid LP leak detector. Turn on all your LP appliances to ensure they are working properly. (Make sure you’ve filled the hot water heater with fresh water before turning it on!)
Recharge the battery(ies)
Replace the batteries in all smoke detectors, LP detectors and Carbon Monoxide detectors. Test each detector to make sure they’re working properly.
Turn on the air conditioner to make sure it’s working properly. If you didn’t clean the filters last fall, go ahead and do that now.
Check all tires and inflate to manufacturer specifications.
If you have a generator, perform the manufacturer’s recommended service, including oil and filter changes. Start up the generator and let it run for at least two hours at a minimum of 50% capacity, or for as long as the owner’s manual recommends.
Check the wheel bearings and brakes. Replace any worn out brake parts and repack the bearings with fresh grease. Connect the umbilical cord to the tow vehicle and check all wiring and braking functions.
If you have a motorhome, be sure to perform all the manufacturer’s recommended service. Be sure to check the following:
Engine oil and filter
Check all fluids and top off as needed
Check air and fuel filters; replace as needed
Check all belts and replace as needed
Check air pressure in tires and inflate to manufacturer specifications. Inspect tires for tread or sidewall damage
Engine oil and filter
Check lights, horn and other dash accessories to ensure all are in proper working order.
Check your manuals for any other regular maintenance recommended by the manufacturer.

Once you’ve finished the above, pull out your checklist of all the items you removed from your RV for the winter, like toothpaste, shampoo, dish soap, etc. (you DID write that all down, right?). If you didn’t, that’s OK. We have a handy checklist of items you should always keep stocked in your RV. Go ahead and print out the list and start checking off what you have and what you need to add.

Start replacing those items now, so when you’re ready to make that first trip of the season you’ll be ahead of the game before you even start packing!

As I said I didn’t write the article just reposted it, so if you fall off the roof don’t blame me. If you don’t llike the advice, once again not my fault. I am just the messenger.

Just looking out the window here and I think I actually see somewhat blue sky. Let’s all hope this snow storm is over and we can get on with spring.

Survey says…

Last year it seemed that I was trying to guess what time would be right for doing craft time and bingo. Sometimes I was successful and we had a good turnout, other times we had only two girls for craft time. So, I thought to myself what is the easiest way to ask the people that are affected – the campers. Thus, the survey idea was developed. The first survey I created was mainly about timing of activities and coming up with ideas for new activities. Then I decided to create another survey as kind of a check up on my marketing. I wanted to see if there are some things that we offer here that people aren’t aware of. This will hopefully help me to see which areas I need to concentrate on advertising and letting people know about. I did keep each survey short and sweet with only 10 multiple choice questions. They should take under 2 minutes to complete. Of course I will be posting the results here as they come in. I don’t really know how the survey idea itself will go over, but I won’t know until I try. Click here to take you to the survey links.
Mother Nature just doesn’t seem ready to give us spring. We were getting some melting with the sunshine yesterday, but the temperatures certainly are helping things out. I really hope this is yet another forecast that they are wrong about since they are not calling for plus temps for a few days yet.
I started getting the iced cap and slushee machine ready to go yesterday. I’m thinking that either Easter Weekend or the following weekend it will be time to do a test run. Then, oh one of the hard parts of being a campground owner I will be forced to taste test the Iced Cap to make sure it is suitable to serve to our guests. lol.

Is that a lion I hear?

March definately seems to be going out like a lion this year – a long drawn out lion. I think that I can speak for all Manitobans when I say enough already. It seems like this storm has been dragging on and on. The wind is howling like it was January out there and they are not predicting an end until tomorrow when we are down to just flurries.  I just decided to check the 14 day trend out of morbid curiosity and it does not look too good. It is supposed to be below average and barely above 0C for the next two weeks. Not the good news we were all looking for. I was hoping to see plus double digits, but it is just not meant to be.

It seems not too many people are thinking summer and camping right now. The phone and email has been worse than dead this week. We need some sunshine to brighten things up and get on with spring and summer.

One of my RV newsletters had an article about the top 10 things you should never do with your RV and I thought that I would share. Some if it is kind of amusing click here

Happy Shovelling Everyone! Just remember 1 month and 1 week until camping.
