Spring Update

It finally looks like spring has sprung and I’m sure everyone agrees that it is nice to be able to get out and enjoy some fresh air after being stuck inside for so long.  I don’t think I have ever been so happy to see mud puddles. Usually I hate all the mud and muck that comes with spring, but you won’t catch me complaining that’s for sure.

We have been clearing the snow off the roadways to the campsites so, most areas are now accessible on foot. Until we get some more melting and drying only the main road is open to vehicle traffic. If you are coming out though be prepared as most areas do still have lots of snow in the sites.

Manitoba Campground opening April

It is surprising how much the snow is dropping each day. Last time I checked the forecast the low tonight was supposed to stay above freezing and a high in the double digits for tomorrow. Assuming that hasn’t changed yet, that should take care of lots more. I saw yesterday that last year we had snow up until April 27. I will go out on a limb and say it will be gone earlier this year.

Even if we do have snow left next week, the power will still be turned on. Needless to say, the only water at the sites will be on the ground. It is usually early May before we can turn the water system.  The Rec Building is open for anyone that is planning to come out though. I know we have some die hard campers that have already been out to snow blow getting ready for the long weekend.

However I apologize but I don’t thing the mini golf will be open at that time

Feeling like a backwards squirrel

You know how every fall the squirrels will gather their acorns and treasures as they get ready for the cold winter. That’s kinda how things are starting to feel around here. We have been gathering our treasures as we get ready for the hot summer. So far our collection includes:

  • more synthetic grass for the pool area
  • more chairs to go around the pools
  • a playhouse for the playground
  • some BBQ’s for the rooms and camping cabin
  • an air hockey table
  • a little play kitchen for the Rec Building
  • a basketball hoop
  • a bunch of other miscellaneous supplies and things
  • I still have a few things that I am waiting to order until we can actually see the ground – umbrellas for the pool area and a dome climber for the playground.  Also still working on updating some of the toys and games in the play area.

We are starting to get a little anxious and ready to get going with this outside stuff that’s for sure.  I know a lot of our campers are feeling the same way. We have had a few out for a drive already this “spring”. I have a couple coming out today to have a look around at some of the seasonal campsites.  It’s officially 17 days until I turn the power on. Unfortunately it looks like shovels will be required for our die hard campers this year.

Shadow or no Shadow

It’s that time of year to rest our hopes of an early spring on a furry animal. Kind of silly really because when have we ever had less than 6 more weeks of winter. But in such drastic conditions as this winter we need a little ray of hope. So with that said I am sending all sorts of positive thoughts to Manitoba Merv at Oak Hammock Marsh.  His friends at the Marsh posted this picture of him getting all ready for his big day.

I think that if he does see his shadow tomorrow morning we shove him back in his hole and make him keep repeating the day until he gets it right.

Less than 3 months

A bit of a bright spot on a stormy day. Did you realize it is now less that 3 months until camping?  I’m sure that I am not alone in having all my fingers crossed that we get an early spring.  Obviously, my acorn theory from my previous post has been blown completely out of the water.  At least we only have a couple more weeks to wait until we will see what Mr Groundhog has to say.  As I write this it is now a balmy 3C and rain. We have gone from -25c windchill this morning to whiteout conditions, to now rain and chance of thunderstorms. I started writing this yesterday and things have not improved since then as we now sit at -17 with a full on snow day.  Someone needs to give the snow globe a good shake to reset everything. This is just downright crazy.

With the coming of the new year it also signals the time to start getting ready for another season. It may not feel like it but it today but spring is going to come sooner or later.  I have spent the last couple weeks updating brochures, finalizing advertising details and planning the 2014 activities.  We have added a few new things this year: a garage sale, Christmas in July, and a Contest Weekend. Our tried and true favorites will be back again: Movie Nights, Halloween in July, Fun Bingo and Freaky Food Challenge. I still have a few things in the works and will continue to update the list as we go along.

Mmmm bacon. Came across this picture the other day. Has anyone tried this method of campfire bacon cooking? How does it work?

Ducks just want to have fun

I feel like we have been depriving our ducks of some fun. Until a few days ago I had no idea that duck water slides were so popular. I received one video in my inbox and was surprised to see these slides appear to be common place at State Fairs. I found other videos from Kentucky, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Admittedly once you have seen one duck slide down the rest all pretty much look the same. Duck goes up, duck comes down. But it is still my duty to share all things duck related.

Now if we could get the ducks to go down the duck slide that might cause some excitement.

My 2 cents

It’s time for those winter predictions and I always like to throw in my 2 cents. I did the usual Google research to see what ‘those in the know’ are saying. And as per usual didn’t really find out much. They basically say it will be cold in winter and we will get snow. No really? Here I thought maybe this would be the winter that the temperature stayed above freezing and we never got any snow.  The Weather Network has predicted a normal fall and so far I would have to say that they are actually right. Probably one of the most known weather prediction factors is the acorns. If there are lots and they come early we will have a hard winter. So, after my rather unsuccessful Googling was done I looked back through my old posts and noticed that in Oct 2011 I reported that we didn’t have any acorns. Last fall  I remember lots of acorns.  So to recap last fall lots of acorns = horrible winter. Two years ago no acorns = awesome winter (as far as winter goes anyway).  I have good news to report – there are no acorns this year!!

jump for joySo for what it’s worth I am calling for a normal fall followed by a warmer than last year winter.  I will even go out on a limb and say our first snow to stay will happen during the last week of November and our first -20 will be during the third week in December. Anyone else have any predictions to share? I have used all sorts of high tech eenie meenie, flip a coin type factors to make my predictions so I’m sure I will do just as well as the professional weather forecasters.

A little scarecrow inspiration

This upcoming weekend is our Scarecrow building contest and I thought I would share some ideas that I came across. The rules are pretty vague as you can see from the following pictures there are many variations on what makes a scarecrow.

The regular pool and hot tubs will still be open this weekend and next weekend. This upcoming weekend looks like it may be our last outdoor movie night of the season. Blankets may be required as the cool fall evenings move in. After this we will move to the indoor movies for the last few weekends.

The plans and work is being completed on the Mud Bog area. We now have some bleachers set up to get a bird’s eye view of the action. The Mud bog weekend will kick off on the Friday evening with a Pig Roast then the racing will begin at 1pm on Saturday. We still have a few campsites left.
