Halloween in August

As always Halloween in August was a popular weekend.  We had some good costumes and also some last minute scrounge the campsite to see what we could find costumes.  Last year we had to contend with cold, pouring rain. This year we couldn’t have asked for a better day.  We stuck with the tried and true and the kids never seem to tire of it. The bobbing for apples starts the day. There were some kids that I think would have bobbed all day if we let them. I didn’t count, but a couple kids must have done at least 7 apples. After the ice cream social we moved on to the ghoulish games.  We wrapped some mummies and found some eyeballs in brains.  Some kids were not too sure about the brains once they stuck their hands in. This face says it all

I heard reports that there were close to 100 kids out for the trick or treating. A lot of them seem to forget to stop and see us at the office so I have to rely on my campers to keep track. It took just over half an hour to make the rounds.

It was almost too hot for the duck…..

We had some good decorating in the sites this year too.

There are more pictures on our facebook page. Check them out here. https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Rubber-Ducky-Resort-and-Campground/6108262485

This weekend coming up our theme is Valentine’s Day. As I write this I am also finishing downloading all the music for our Valentine’s Day dance on Saturday evening.  The plan is to do some crafts, hand out some secret Valentine’s and have a dance in the evening.

Fear Factor

Fear was not a factor at Rubber Ducky this past weekend. We had 11 kids teams and 8 adults teams doing battle. The kids were not too fond of our dog food (canned ham), tofu, onion, baby food, and hot pepper. Most were able to finish it, but the tofu really got them. From the food they moved on to the obstacle course. They had to search through a bucket of pea gravel to find a lucky key, jump through some hoops, under a chair tunnel and try to unlock the jail to release their partner. The top 3 teams were Jessica and Serena; Matt and Jesse; Madison and Raevin.

For the adults we switched up the food a little and added in some green pickled eggs, beef liver, chicken livers, oysters and kept the tofu and hot peppers. Apparently the tofu was a little icky because it stumbled up some of the adults too. In the end we only had 3 teams that were able to make it past the eating and onto the obstacle course. I decided to change the chair tunnel to a table tunnel. There may have been some stuck adults if we went the other way. The top adults teams were Brian and Justyce; Chad and Heather; Mike and Matthew.  One of the adults ‘jailbirds’ actually works on the other side of the bars in real life, so everyone got a few laughs out of that.

It was a great way to spend an hour or so and we hope everyone enjoyed particpating and watching. A big thank you to the volunteers and contestants.  Click this link to see all the pictures.  http://s788.photobucket.com/albums/yy164/RubberDuckyResort/Fear%20Factor/

Coming up this weekend it is halloween in August. That means games, decorating, pool bobbing for apples and of course trick or treating.  There may even be a little watermelon carving.

Hot, hot, hot

So, how many times today have you heard the line “Is it hot enough for you?” I have taken a personal stand that you will not hear me complain about how hot it is. I won’t beat around the bush – I hate cold and I hate winter. I would take plus 40 over minus 40 anyday. Sure it has it’s downsides and it is not always comfortable, but it is still much better to jump in the pool now than it was in February.  Last week was sure something else. It was to the point that people seemed to want to hibernate inside the air conditioning and not even consider camping during that kind of heat. This past weekend was quite a drastic change. The weather was definately a lot cooler and cloudier. Thankfully yesterday things changed and we are back to the perfect Manitoba summer weather. Not too hot, not too cold, just right.

Last Saturday was our 6th annual Children’s Wish Fundraiser.  Our numbers were down this year with our grand total at only $2347. I think this was a result of the heat wave as we didn’t have as many people out this year. Everyone who did come out had a good time however. There was a lineup of volunteers wanting to get dunked in the dunk tank. Everybody was very willing to get wet and cool off. We also ran a couple of wet n wacky train rides to help cool things down. Some of our campers volunteered to spray water, shoot water guns, throw water balloon, etc as the train went by.  We had a great group of volunteers help out with the day and I must send out a thank you for their help. Duckyfest will be back in 2012 and is always the 3rd Saturday in July.

This past weekend was our Teddy Bear Picnic and we had about 39 bears come visit Dr Ducky. As always Dr Ducky was prepared with her medical supplies to fix up all the booboos and get the bears on their way to recovery. We had planned to do a Bubble Zone on Saturday evening, but with the few rain showers floating around we postponed it until Sunday morning.

This upcoming long weekend will be the usual Karaoke and Movie Night. In the past we have had a mini golf tournament on Aug Long, but we are changing things up a little for this year. I am going to randomly select a hole and everyone will compete on that one hole to see who gets the best score.   If anyone is still thinking of joining us for the weekend. I still have one motel open. We don’t have any sites open, but do always keep a waiting list in case of cancellation.

Enjoy the sunshine!!

Momma Knows Best

If you remember a few weeks ago I made the announcement that we now had baby ducks. You may or may not have noticed that I haven’t mentioned them since. Well that is because we had a bit of a puzzle on our hands – they just disappeared. We had no idea what happened to them until last weekend things started to come together. I was told by one family that they had been out by the drainage ditch and saw a mother duck with some babies. The next day someone else was there and saw the same thing. Neither family could positively identify them as ours.  Of course every time I went out there were no babies or mommas in sight. I gave up and thought it must have been a wild momma who had moved on. Then we are driving in the lane this afternoon and to my pleasant surprise spot momma and 5 half grown babies. I am assuming that she was worried about their safety and kept them hidden away until they were bigger. That just made my week seeing that those little guys were safe and I guess maybe momma does know best.

Happy Summer

It’s officially here and we have even been having the weather to prove it. The past week has been just what we have been waiting for – bright sun and warm temperatures. It was another great camping weekend. We did have some rain come throughout the nights but the days were what camping memories are made of.

The first Rubber Ducky duck hunt went well on the weekend. Friday morning I hid 8 ducks throughout the campground and our campers managed to find most of them. On Saturday morning I put more out and there were a total of 10 duckies waiting to be found that day. By Sunday afternoon there were still two ducks unaccounted for and I had to start giving hints. By the end of the day all the ducks had been found and all the treats handed out.  I am already looking for more hiding spots for our next duck hunt.  I will admit to making one mistake, but it made for laughs on Sunday. I didn’t keep track of which number of duck was hidden where so as the kids brought in the ducks I knew which numbers were out, but not where they were.  I also was still somewhat asleep when I was hiding them at 6amish and kind of temporarily forgot some of my hiding places. lol. Oh well, as I say it made for some laughs when I had to admit that I wasn’t even sure where the ducks were. In the end all the ducks were located and I learned that next time I will write down where they go 🙂

This weekend is another Rubber Ducky first. We are having a campground poker derby. It will work much like a snowmobile or atv derby but you will walk to the checkpoints to get your cards. I am still finalizing the details and if you are camping this weekend, you can pick up your ‘This weekend at the duck’ for all the details.
