Can the Bombers pull off another one?

Last weekend’s game was certainly a nailbiter. We had a few people come out to watch the game in the rec building and it was worth it. Talk about leaving it to the last minute. There is a poll on the Bombers website asking who will be in the Grey Cup. Winnipeg vs Saskatchewan currently has the most votes, with Winipeg vs BC in second. Of course most people taking the poll would be biased given that it is the ‘Bombers’ web site.  The statistics for the Bombers Vs Argos in the playoffs is not good. Since 1933 they have met 12 times, the Bombers only won 3 times (1988, 89, 90). But I guess all that means absolutely nothing if you are a true Bomber fan. On Sunday ya gotta just go with your heart. GO BOMBERS GO!!!

One more seasonal

We added one more family to our flock of seasonals this week. There was snow on the ground when they brought their camper in, but at least they are now all set up for next spring.

Speaking of snow, it is about that time of year. Hopefully everyone has now had a chance to get their campers and houses all ready for old man winter. We have been rather fortunate so far, but I think that is about to change. Last time I checked they were calling for snow and rain off and on all weekend. I think that we are all set here now. The pool has been put to sleep, the duck ‘chateau’ is all ready to go and Smoky (our stray cat that adopted us and our campers this summer) has moved inside. Now we wait. I must say that I personally am not fond of winter and snow, but from a business standpoint I kind of hope for snow to bring out the snowmobilers. I guess it is a fact of life in Manitoba any way.

Email newsletter day today

Got my Grey cup newsletter sent out today.  Hopefully everyone is having a boring Monday afternoon and are looking for something to read when it arrives in their inbox. It would be nice to see the Bombers in the game this year, but I guess we will just have to wait and see. We have talked to a few people that are already planning on coming out for the party. If they would only move the game to a Saturday it would make it easier to entice people. The majority of people have to work Monday and don’t like to party the night before. It sounds like the Northern Lites Club will be here. They are selling Grey Cup tickets this year and will be sorting out the winners at our place. I am sure that it won’t be me with the score that I picked, but there is nothing unusual about that.

4 Canada geese

Happened to catch sight of 4 Canadas in the pond the other day. They were camera shy however. I walked out the rec building to take a picture and they immediately took off. Oh well I will catch them next time.

Lucy goes South

Last fall we had one lonely blue goose stop by the pond for a visit. She was all alone and it was quite late in the season. She wandered around hanging out with the ducks, then one day just disappeared. We thought nothing else of it until a couple weeks ago we were driving out past the new pond and here is this one lonely bird. We figure that it must be the same goose from last year stopped by again on her way South. Oh and Lucy you ask?? – what else would you name a goose. Lucy Goosey.

A little nostalgia for RDR

Our very first guests to ever stay with us in our suites have returned again. They were here to hunt waterfowl in 2005 and are back this year. Things have changed a little since they were last here. We had barely finished the rooms (the cupboards went in two nights before they arrived). We didn’t have the rec building completed yet and had to serve their meals in our house – more like a traditional bed and breakfast. This year we have the rec building set up for their meals and relaxing after their hunts. We are now able to joke about the ‘remember when’. They are an easy going bunch and were able to bear with us as we got things organized and set up.

This weather may be fit for ducks, but it certainly hasn’t been for hunters. There has been an overabundance of cold, rainy days for the guys this past couple weeks. Seems like it will just dry up and down comes the rain again. They come back in covered in mud and soaking wet. As long as they get their birds they don’t seem to mind. I personally don’t think you could pay me to go out in and lay in a cold, muddy field at the crack of dawn.

Waterfowl spotted in the new pond

We have reports of real geese and ducks (as in not our own) in the new pond. There have been just a couple here and there, but it is a start. We are hoping to get more to stop by for a visit.

From Sunny California to Fall in Manitoba

As I have said before we are busy with American waterfowl hunters staying in our rooms this month. Well, we had quite the crew here this past week. They have stayed with us before and as always it makes for a great time.

Don had a ‘bang’ up time with some of our campers and friends on Saturday night. Then just before leaving on Sunday afternoon they had to test out the new CWO transportation unit.

Yes, what you are seeing is 1 dog, 6 California hunters, 2 Manitoba outfitters and 2Rubber Ducky girlies. Fortunately we didn’t need the vaseline to get anyone out and the train made it around safely.

On a personal note – some days it gets hard for me to keep up with the schedule this time of year, but for the 4 days that you guys were here it was never an issue. It was great to have such a fun, relaxed atmosphere around here – I almost looked forward to getting up at 4 am. I know that Sarah would agree with me. She hasn’t had such a captive audience for her silliness in a while, especially the knock knock jokes while Hollywood was cornered in the kitchen.

I hope that you guys had a great time as well and that we will see you again.

Just a little free advertising – for a good cause

Our local snowmobile club, the Northern Lites is holding social evening on Oct 13 at Meadow Lea Hall. They have booked the band Circuit Breaker to perform that evening. Circuit Breaker is the band that played at our DuckyFest fundraiser in July. Anyone who has heard them before knows that they do an incredible job. They have a tremendous amount of talent.

The snowmobile club is using the funds raised from the social to purchase a groomer to maintain their trails. This club is run by volunteers and they each dedicate a lot of personal time to keep the club going. The purchase and maintenance of the groomer was a huge undertaking for this club and they need all the support they can get. If you are interested in getting tickets or donating for the silent auction you can call Norah at 204-375-6052 or email me at info@rubberduckyresort.com and I will forward it.
