Fall Superstitions

This is one of those  “you learn something new everyday” type of days. I had no idea there were so many superstitions associated with Fall. OK, I never said that I learned anything important. But for a Friday afternoon it is a good way to kill some time. I was strolling through the internet and noticed this comment posted:

“It’s said that if you catch a falling leaf on the first day of Autumn you will not catch a cold all winter. Good luck tomorrow!”

Which of course got me googling around. There are a couple different versions of this belief. Some don’t specify that it is the first day of Autumn, but just anytime in Autumn. And others are very specific in that you must keep the leaf until spring when the new buds appear.

Apparently it is not just leaves that are good luck. If you carry around an acorn it is said to bring good luck. An acorn sounds easier to carry than a rabbit’s foot anyway. If you have every been worried about your house being stuck by lightning, simply put an acorn on your window sill. This lonely acorn will surely keep the lightning away. Forget that plastic surgery ladies, according to British legend if you carry an acorn with you it will delay the aging process.  It will keep you feeling young forever.

So, in conclusion what does this all really mean. Not much.  But if anyone else is interested in catching leaves and picking acorns tomorrow meet me at 11am.

In celebration of the arrival of the Fall season we will be having a Scarecrow building contest this weekend. Here’s an idea to get you started

It is also our Cozy Campfire Special this weekend. Get a free bundle of firewood and a Campfire FX when you stay for 2 nights. (Be sure to mention the special when booking or registering)

Open Farm Day 2012

If you are looking for an excuse to get out for a Sunday Drive this weekend you may want to check out Open Farm Day. In this area you can learn about cows, pigs, sheep and alpacas among other things. The full listing of participating farms is available here.  We will be offering self guided tours throughout the day that will details our transformation from family farm to family campground. If your timing is right, you will be able to climb aboard the Ducky Express for the tour. If you have been watching my blog and website through our expansion updates, this is now the perfect excuse to come out and see the changes in person.

After a day of touring around you can stop by the Warren Hall for the annual Warren Fall Supper hosted by the Warren United Church. There is no shortage of fall suppers around the area. Pretty much one a weekend from now until Thanksgiving.

Back to School Blues

As I write this we are now nearing the end of the first week of back to school.  I have seen a variety of responses when asked if this was a good thing or bad thing. Most seem to be happy to get back to seeing their friends, but not so much with school itself. Luckily it was a short week to ease back into routine. We are already back into another weekend. Time to kick back and relax again.
There has been a significant change in the population around here this week. There have still been quite a few campers out enjoying the quietness of fall camping during the past week, however the numbers do pale in comparison to what we see during the non school weeks.  Our weekend campers are starting to roll in now and soon things will be hopping again. The pool is sitting at a comfy 84F and just waiting for the splashing to begin. This weekend we are going to try out some Redneck Horseshoes. I must admit that I have never actually tried it, but after watching pictures and videos online it looked like it should be good for a few laughs.  The ‘Redneck’ part is that instead of horseshoes, you use toilet seats.
This past weekend was our annual chicken wing eating contest. As usual things got a little messy. This year we had 8 eaters step up to the table. Congratulations to Benny who came out as King of the Wing.

The Finale

The cupcake eating resulted in a few messy faces as well. The idea was they were not supposed to use their hands to eat the cupcakes.

Our Fall Specials are starting up in full swing this weekend. We also have a fall special on propane tank fills. For a limited time you can get your 2olb tank filled for $11.99 and a 30lb for $16.99.

Fall Finale Special Time

Sadly it is time to admit that summer is coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean that camping has to stop.  The activities here at the Duck keep going all the way into the fall. Our heated pool and hot tub will stay open until late September so there will always be something for the kids to do.

As part of our Grand Reopening celebration we have come up with a special Fall Finale offer – Camp from September 3 – October  15 for only $675.  You stay for 42 nights, but only pay for 21.

There are limited sites available for this special offer, so call (204-322-5286) or email (rducky2@mts.net) today for more information. Mention the Fall Finale offer when booking your campsite.

Quarry Days this Weekend

It’s that time of year when Stonewall comes out to have fun and welcome lots of visitors. Every August the organizers of Stonewall Quarry Days do an amazing job of lining up some great activities. The biggest features are the Slo Pitch Tournament, the Midway and the Entertainment Stage.  This year they were even able to bring in Aaron Pritchett to provide some evening entertainment.  The events happen all weekend long and if you are in the area it is definitely worth checking out. Don’t forget it is only 15 minutes from Rubber Ducky. Check out their website for the full schedule of events

Introducing Dizzy

I figured it was time for me to make a long overdue introduction to the newest attraction at The Duck. I was told that the first thing we had to do was come up with a name for our newest duck, so here we have Miss Dizzy Duck. She has made lots of new friends over the past couple weeks.

Rubber Ducky Slide

There have been lots of kids enjoying a ride down her back. All day long she just sits there and smiles, loving all the attention. Nothing seems to ruffle her feathers.

That’s all folks….

Our 2012 expansion is now complete. The last step was the opening of the new hot tub last week.  With the addition of this second tub, we have now designated the original hot tub as adult only and the new one is designated as the family tub.

Some of the new seasonal sites have been open for almost month already and there are many new family settling into their new seasonal campsites. We still have a few seasonal campsites available right now. Our seasonal agreements do run on a full one year term, so anyone that moves in now will still be able to camp until August of next year. At that time you will have the first option to renew your campsite. Now is the time to have your choice of sites. We even still have a couple that are beside each other which is perfect for friends or family that like to camp together.

DuckyFest

It was another perfect day for DuckyFest this past Saturday.

There was stuff going on all over the place all day. We had people here, there and everywhere. We started at about 10am with our volunteers organizing some great donations into silent auction prizes and carried on to 11pm with the Fireworks display. The hours in between were filled with Karaoke, games,  the dunk tank and some always fabulous entertainment by Circuit Breaker. I was able to sneak out and get a few pictures of the fun. If anyone else has any more that they would be willing to share I would be extremely grateful. You can email them to me at rducky2@mts.net.

The Pool is Now Open

The first lucky duckies in the pool this morning

It has been a long, busy week getting things ready for today. But it was all worth it to see the pool fill with smiling facing the minute I undid the fence. More pictures will follow after this weekend. Or better yet, just come on out and splash around and keep cool in the water. Our new campsites are also now open, so we have lost of space for everyone.

So Close

We are getting very close to the completion of our expansion. Some of the the campsites are now finished. The last ones should be open within the next couple weeks. Most of the major work is done and all that is left now is the tweaks and final landscaping.

And now to the question on everyone’s mind. When does the new pool open?

As you can see, the water is now splashing around. Other than being a little chilly still it is running and operational. Later today I am going to get my tutoring session on how to operate all the little toys and doodads.  It took a lot of hard work in some very hot weather but they managed to finish the bricks around the decking yesterday evening. The pool guys and electricians did their last little bits today and the water started flowing. Now it just sits there teasing everyone as we wait for the final inspection before we open to the public. Our tentative pool opening date is Friday July 13, 2012.  Be sure to be watching our website, Facebook page and this blog. As soon as it is official I will be posting the news everywhere I possibly can.
