Calling all Backyard Chefs

We are in the process of planning a new activity for this camping season. Every Long Weekend we will have a themed cooking contest. All of our campers and their guests are invited to bring your best dish to our panel of judges. And if you are more into the eating than the cooking each contest weekend we will also be doing a drawing for a guest judge.  Of course prizes will be issued for the winners.

May Long Weekend – Chili Cookoff

July Long – Barbecued or smoked recipe

August Long – TBA (suggestions welcome)

September Long – Chicken Wings

More details will be shared as we figure them out. But we wanted to make sure everyone has  lots of time to perfect their recipes.

Winter Fun

I will start this post with a disclaimer – I haven’t tried any of these myself, but I found them on the internet so they must be true. Or at least they all look like fairly plausible. If anyone tries them I would love to hear how it turned out.

-For those of you on facebook, you may have already seen the video from this morning about bubbles. This one is pretty straight forward. Go out into the cold with bubble solution and bubble wand, blow some bubbles and watch them freeze.

-Now go find a nice big balloon. While you are still cozy warm inside blow it up to maximum capacity. This part is not relevant to the game, but I personally recommend drawing a big smiley face on the balloon. Now take your new friend outside and watch as it shrinks to a sad excuse for fun. Don’t worry all is not lost, bring Billy Balloon back inside the warm house and he will come back to life.

-This sounds like a good one for Winnipeg: make your own slurpee. Put a 2L bottle of your favorite pop in a snowbank for about 4 hours.  Take it out of the snow and twist off the cap. Poof instant slurpee. I was a little skeptical on this one but found a video that shows it actually working.

-Apparently you can use a frozen banana as a hammer.I think I would have to be really bored to go out into the cold to freeze a banana. But feel free to try it if you’re into that sort of thing.

-This one has been tried and true. The old throw the hot water into the air and watch it freeze trick. Apparently the key is the hot water. If you take cold  water and throw it above your head, you are going to get wet. If you want to make it extra fun, pull out the super soaker to squirt the water.

-This is a good one after the kids have been cooped up inside and are driving you crazy – Watermelon bowling. Fill some empty 2L bottles with water and food coloring. Then set them outside to freeze. Find yourself a bowling ball type watermelon and carve out some finger holes then set it outside near your pins. Once they are frozen line everything up  in the driveway and have fun.

-Time for a treat. Bring some maple syrup to a boil. Find a nice patch of clean (non yellow) snow and pour it out. Use a popsicle stick to twist it and roll it around until it hardens.

-If you don’t have maple syrup you can still make a treat with this Snow Ice Cream. Mix together 1 cup sugar, 2 cups milk and 1 tsp vanilla. Mix these all together and put in the freezer to stay cold. Go outside and find about 8 cups of that nice, fresh white snow. Add enough snow to the milk mixture to make a ice creamyish texture. Eat right away as it melts fast.

-Let the creativity flow with snow painting. Fill a few spray bottles with cold water and a few drops of food coloring. Now all you need is some snow, which isn’t hard to find around here. Spray your ‘paint’to create your own personalized graffiti.

Christmas and Camping

Well love it or hate it we are heading full on into the Christmas Season. In a couple days we will turn the calendar to December and then the countdown really begins.

One of the hardest parts of Christmas prep seems to be the question of what gifts to buy. We always have those people that ‘don’t need anything’ but we still like to get them something. We may be able to help you find something better than a pair of socks. Last week we received a new supply of Ducky Bucks. I know what you thinking:

“What the heck are Ducky Bucks?” They are our Duckified version of gift certificates.

“What do I do with them?” They can be used like cash at Rubber Ducky

“Who should I buy them for?” Anyone and everyone. They are perfect for anyone that camps here or even visits here. Grandma and Grandpa can buy snacks from the Concession. The kids can ride the bumper boats. Auntie so and so can spend a night in one of our Rooms. The whole family can enjoy a camping trip next summer.

“When will they expire?” They are good forever and ever and ever.

“What dollar amounts do they come in?” Each gift card is custom made. We can do anything from $5 to $1000.

And, don’t worry, you don’t need to make a trip out to the campground to buy them. You can order by phone  or email and pay by credit card or Etransfer. All from the comfort of your home or at work when the boss isn’t looking. (204-322-5286 or rducky2@mts.net).  We do recommend ordering before December 15 to make sure you get them in time for Christmas.

We also have a few Rubber Ducky jackets still in stock, but those you will have to come out for a  visit to pickup. Feel free to email first to check for sizes, styles and availability though.

More details of our campground gift certificates are on our website. Make sure you stop to enter our new giveaway to win $50 Ducky Bucks for yourself.
